DETAILS
In the heart of the Northern Italian Dolomites, close to the border with Austria and dominated by the famous Tre Cime (Three Peaks), is the beautiful Tyrolean village of Dobbiaco. Starting our walks from here allows us to discover the beauty and sheer magnificence of the majestic Alta Pusteria Valley, an area renowned for its 3000m jagged peaks. UNESCO recognizes this area as one of the most unique and spectacular mountain environments in the world. With over 1000 km of trails, the Italian Dolomites are a Mecca for walkers. Our walks include a high ridge path along the Austrian border with 360-degree views over the Italian Dolomites and Austrian Alps. We’ll also enjoy a spectacular circular hike of the world-famous Tre Cime – three immense obelisks of sheer rock that have now become symbolic of the region.

NOTE FOR WALKERS:
Our walking is along superbly varied and well-maintained footpaths. Walkers should have a good fitness level, be confident on uneven terrain, and not suffer from vertigo.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL DAY: Airport – DOBBIACO/TOBLACH

Arrival at airport. Disembarkation formalities and meet with our guide, outside custom area.
Departure with minibuses towards Braies (see TRANSFER TIME). Arrival and accommodation at HOTEL ERIKA 3* (approx 10 minutes from Braies Lake). Room assignment. Dinner and overnight hotel.

 Day 2: TOWARD STRUDELKOPF

We start with a 30 minutes transfer to the 1991 metres of Prato Piazza where we leave the van at the local parking area. We start walking amongst beautiful wildflowers and ascend to the summit of Strudlekopf (2307m). On a clear day, from the summit, we can enjoy views of the Tre Cime, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo. Packed lunch during the excursion.
In the afternoon stop at “Mondo Latte” for visit and cheese tasting
Return to hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Ascent: 530m – Descent: 530m – Lenght: 10,5kms – Duration: 4:00h

Day 3: MOUNT ELMO and the KLAMMBACHUTTE WALK: Sillianer hutte/Klammbachalm

This fabulous walk takes us along the impressive crest of the Carniche Alps. We start the day witha short bus transfer then cable car ascent up to Mount Elmo (2041m). From there, an old military supply route crosses the border and takes us to the refuge Sillianerhutte (in Austria). This ridge forms a border between Italy and Austria and gives the most spectacular views across the Austrian Alps. Light lunch. Our descent will be on a less well-defined rocky path that crosses the pretty mountain pastures of the Klammbachalm to arrive at the postcard-pretty Klammbachhutte, before the forest track back down to the village of Moos and finally Sesto.

Day 4: BIKE TOUR: FROM DOBBIACO TO LIENZ (AUSTRIA)

Today we will ride a bike starting from the train station of Dobbiaco we will follow the line of the Pusteria valley in a slight descent of 49 kms towards the pretty small town of Lienz in Austria, considered one of the most beautiful villages of the country. After the light lunch and some time in Lienz, a confortable train ride will take us back to Dobbiaco and BRAIES.

Ascent: 40 m – Descent: 570m – Lenght: 49kms – Duration: 3:30h – Surface: tarmac cycleway

Day 5: DOLOMIEU TRAIL /CORTINA D‘AMPEZZO

Today we’ll head into the heart of the Ampezzo Natural Park in the Italian-speaking Veneto region. Setting off from Cortina, we climb the steep slope using a cable car until Rifugio Faloria. Here we will follow the Dolomieu Trail dedicated to the discoverer of the Dolomia rock, that offers a spectacular view of the Tofane and the Ampezzo Valley. It is a very panoramic hiking route characterized by a moderate slope, initially following the ridge of rocky ridges and then entering the larch, stone pine and fir forest, becoming a dirt road that can be followed downhill all the way to Cortina.

Once back in the village, some free time to explore one of the most famous winter sports towns of Northern Italy.

Ascent: 85m – Descent: 940m – Lenght: 10.5kms – Duration: 3:30

DAY 6 – WALK TO BRAIES LAKE

Our destination for today will be the Braies Lake, which without any exaggeration can be defined as the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites. The trail is dedicated to Viktor Edler von Glanvell, climber of the Braies Dolomites, well-known pioneer of mountaineering and also the first to climb over 60 peaks, walls and ridges in the Braies Valley in the years between 1890 and 1905.

The Lake itself is located at an altitude of 1,500m above sea level with its turquoise-green color and the imposing Seekofel massif (2,810 m) that surrounds it. The lake, with an average depth of 17 m, according to the legend was created when savages once mined for gold here. The shepherds who lived here were jealous and tried to steal these treasures. They were unsuccessful, because the savages opened underground springs and sunk all the wealth in the resulting lake.

Ascent: 400m – Descent: 400m – Lenght: 14,5kms – Duration: 5h

Day 7: BONNER HUTTE/PFANNHORN AREA/BERGALM HUTTE

With an ascent of 700m, it’s a tough but entirely worthy pull up to the idyllic Bonner Hutte for a tremendous panoramic stop for a coffee overlooking the unmistakable Tre Cime. The summit of the Pfannhorn at 2663m lies a 300 metres further up but even from here we will be rewarded with a truly unforgettable panorama of the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps – arguably the most expansive view on the whole itinerary. Packed lunch. The descent takes us through glorious mountain pastures and the valley bowls of the Bergalm via the isolated little farmstead of Bergalmhutte. We might end our walk with a relaxing drink on the terrace of the Seiterhof bar/restaurant before we go back to our hotel.

Day 8:  THE GREAT CROSSING OF THE THREE PEAKS (Tre Cime di Lavaredo) from AURONZO REFUGE

After breakfast, we reach the Rifugio Auronzo where we park the van and start our walk, one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites. Our excursion follows a flat and comfortable path, between meadows and mountain pines, that will lead us around the world famous three peaks. The view opens between the massif formed by Crodarossa and Cima undici and the mighty Tre Scarperi mountain (Dreischuster). Our path will now be in sight of the Crode, which form a real theatrical backdrop in front of the spectacular Tre Cime di Lavaredo. After several photo stops, the path will take us back to the starting point.
