WALKING THE WORLD®

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, COLORADO

ITINERARY:

Pre-Trip.     Your Colorado walking tour officially begins tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. after arrival in Estes Park, Colorado.  To ensure that you arrive on time, we strongly suggest that you arrive one day prior to the start date.  Accommodations can be arranged for this night should you choose.

Day 1    Trip beings at 1:00 p.m. Travel by airport shuttle to Rocky Mountain National Park.  Check into our accommodations, enjoy a fresh lunch and head into the Park for our first hike.

Day 2    Today’s hike will take us 3.8 miles one way to Fern Lake.  With a total elevation gain of 1,375′ we’ll stop to enjoy both “The Pool” and Fern Falls on our way to Fern Lake.  You’ll enjoy every minute of today’s hike and then spend a relaxing evening in the town of Estes Park.

Day 3    Glacier Gorge, in the main section of the Park, has some of the most scenic trails in the Park.  Today we’ll push our boots up the trail to spectacular Black Lake, about 4.7 miles one way.  With views to Longs Peak, we’ll hike past a major waterfall and several smaller lakes before cresting out at Black Lake.

Day 4    A drive up Fall River Road will take us to a trail head near the high reaches of the Park with views past a range of peaks to the surrounding countryside.  On our way we’ll pass the area of the Lawn Lake Flood.  At the end of our hike we’ll continue over Trail Ridge Road for a look at the Park from “above”.

Day 5    Today we’ll head to Wild Basin, south of the main Park area, for a hike to Ouzel Lake.  Wild Basin, true to its name, traverses through Aspen forest, past rushing streams, to a high mountain lake where we will enjoy a picnic lunch.  Total mileage is about 10 miles with an elevation gain of about 1500′.

Day 6      Back in the Glacier Gorge area, we’ll explore the area around Lake Haiyaha, a moderate 7 mile round-trip hike to a forested area enclosed by towering peaks.  A good day for wildflower photography, writing, or just thoroughly enjoying the sights around us.

Day 7    The Flattop Mountain area, our destination today, will delight your senses with thick forests, meadows of abundant wildflowers, and craggy peaks.  Our feet will carry us for about 8.8 miles and an elevation gain of 2,849′.  Farewell Dinner.
